Claus Niedermaier is the founder of the Barber Angels Brotherhood.
If you find yourself wondering why so many people are getting their hair cut on the side of the street in Hout Bay this weekend, it’s only the Barber Angels Brotherhood doing their thing.
In 2016, Claus Niedermaier, a barber from Germany, founded an association with ten friends to help the homeless by cutting their hair, restoring their dignity and self-esteem in the process.
Fast forward to 2025 and this basic idea has grown into a community, an association with more than 600 active Barber Angels, doing good in six European countries (Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Norway and the Netherlands) and, more recently, two South American countries (Chile and Colombia).
“My passion is to help people to bring a smile in their face,” Mr Niedermaier said, moments after arriving in Cape Town with his team of barbers ready to tackle the streets of Hout Bay. “South Africa will be our new journey.”
On Sunday February 2, from 1pm to 5pm, the Barber Angels Brotherhood will be at the Hout Bay Harbour to provide free haircuts, shaves and more to the homeless.
