A gas leak at a factory in Cato Ridge on Sunday morning affected more than a dozen people.
The Mi7 National Group confirmed they received reports of the leak at approximately 11am and immediately sent out their emergency teams, while emergency staff from the Hibiscus Hospital Cato Ridge, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, medics discovered that a burst pipe on the factory premises had released chlorine gas into the air. Employees from the factory, as well as individuals from neighbouring properties, were affected, with many experiencing inhalation-related symptoms.
A triage station was quickly established on-site, where emergency responders assessed and stabilised patients. More than a dozen individuals were transported to a local hospital for further treatment, while several others received medical attention at the scene and were released without requiring hospitalisation.
The factory's response team managed to control the leak with support from the eThekwini Fire and Rescue services, that were called in to assist.
