The City is urging motorists and residents to obey no-parking areas and road closures for a car-free route on Sunday during the Cape Town Marathon.
Road closures will be in place as thousands of runners prepare to take part in the 2024 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday October 20.
The City of Cape Town is urging residents to avoid parking along the route to create a car-free route to increase the city’s chances of inclusion in the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The Cape Town Marathon is a candidate race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series of six of the most renowned world marathons, and according to a statement from the City of Cape Town, the marathon is currently being assessed on a number of criteria with the intention to include Cape Town for the 2026 season.
One major benchmark being evaluated for the 2024 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is a car-free route.
In order to assist the race organisers to get top marks on this aspect of the criteria, a number of roads along the marathon route have been designated no-parking areas for race day on Sunday.
This includes roads on the Atlantic Seaboard, CBD, District Six, Mowbray, Newlands, Claremont, Rondebosch, Observatory, Salt River and Woodstock.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said one of the biggest issues the marathon encountered during the 2023 race was parked cars along the route, which resulted in an unfavourable assessment by the World Marathon Majors officials.
“For the 2024 race, we are asking residents and visitors to assist in getting the Cape Town Marathon over the mark. Please avoid parking or leaving cars along the designated no parking areas along the route leading up to and on race day.”
Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is making arrangements for secure parking for residents in areas where only on-street parking is available.
Several roads along the route, including several in the Cape Town CBD, have been designated as no-parking areas on race day, with some affected from today, Friday October 18, from 5pm, to Sunday October 20.
