A 25-year-old woman was arrested in Goodwood on Monday for perjury and defeating the course of justice, say police.
This came after she opened an armed robbery case at Goodwood police station on Saturday September 28, according to police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.
According to the complainant’s report, she was at a shopping mall in Voortrekker Road, Goodwood, on Friday September 27, when she was approached by an unknown man, Captain Van Wyk said.
He had allegedly pointed a gun at her and “deceived her out of R24 000 cash and her work laptop valued at R25 000”, he said.
Goodwood detectives had interviewed the woman on Monday September 30.
“During the interview, they followed up on leads and clues and got suspicious of the complainant’s account of the facts. As the interview progressed, the complainant came up with the truth and admitted that she gave a false statement regarding the events."
The woman was arrested, and she had been due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on Tuesday October 1, but National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the matter had not been enrolled as it had been referred back to the police for further investigation.
The police have warned the public against opening false criminal cases, saying they strain police resources that could have been directed to real incidents of crime and to victims who need police assistance.
