Artists from Supporting Mentorship through Art, an organisation that uplifts communities through art, put the finishing touches on their Women’s Month mural last week.The mural, which was sponsored by Dulux South Africa, was painted to create awareness about gender-based violence and pay homage to the resilience of women in Mitchell's Plain.From left: Artists Rizah Potgieter, Zeenat Isaacs, Bahia Classen, Angelo Waterloo and Thakier Adams showcase their work of art.
The words from the well-known resistance song, Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo (You strike the women, you strike the rock), symbolise the courage and strength demonstrated by South African women from all walks of life who took part in the 1956 march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest against the oppressive pass laws of the time.Artist Zeenat Isaacs says she hopes the mural will serve as a constant reminder to Mitchell’s Plain women of their strength.
