Lentegeur Police have opened an inquest docket into the death of an unidentified individual following the discovery of a decomposed body in a stormwater drain in Mitchell’s Avenue, Woodlands, last Thursday, July 11.
The body was found by City of Cape Town officials who responded to complaints by Woodlands residents of a blocked drain.
Lentegeur police’s Constable Navon van Houten says the police’s forensics unit could not identify the gender or age of the body.
“Forensics could not determine whether the body was that of a male, female or a child because of its decomposed state. No other information is available at this stage, as we are waiting on the results of an autopsy,” he said.
Byron de Villiers, chairman of Lentegeur Community Police Forum, has called on Mitchell’s Plain residents who are missing any relatives to reach out to Lentegeur police station.
“It is assumed that the body washed through the stormwater system and ended up in Woodlands, which means it could have entered the system from elsewhere in Mitchell’s Plain. We do encourage residents with missing family members to reach out to SAPS,” he said.
Anyone with information, can contact Lentegeur Police’s Detective-Constable Joshua Keur on 066 146 1016 or Detective-Sergeant Henry Balie on 074 892 4499.
