Mandalay residents recently installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, which they hope will keep their community safe.

Community leader Sakhile “Shakes” Mahlaba said the cameras allows them to monitor incidents, to notify SAPS of any suspicious activities, and to garner support for them to catch the criminals.

The residents had raised funds to have the cameras installed on Tuesday May 14.

He said the community had seen an increase in the number of housebreakings, car jackings, theft and murders.

Station commander Colonel Umavathie Rameshwarnath said the initiative could help prevent crime.
