Those who took part in the fitness and wellness session hosted by the Blaqpearl Foundation with SA table tennis champion, Shane Overmeyer.
The Blaqpearl Foundation held programmes and workshops focused on taking a stand against gender-based violence (GBV) during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.
The annual United Nations campaign takes place from November 25 (International Day of No Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
Founder of the Blaqpearl Foundation, Janine Overmeyer said their organisation is committed to ending gender-based violence and supporting those affected by it.
“As part of the 16 Days of Activism, we have planned various programmes to raise awareness and provide practical help. We hosted a S.H.A.R.E (Sexual Health Awareness Reproductive Education) workshop, fitness and wellness workshop and self-defence training, with the aim to empower, unite and work together to protect our women, children and all vulnerable to abuse,” she said.
Stephen Pitts, 31, from Portland, took part in the self-defence workshop hosted by Sensei Eugene Adonis from Bonsai Self-defence Academy on Wednesday December 6.
“He shared valuable intel with us, on street violence and even being a professional seventh degree black belt. Avoiding conflict is smarter than being the man of the match. It's good to teach the youth how to diffuse a situation because these days people get heated up so quickly and to save a life is more valuable. I was humbled by his lesson and wish to further my knowledge of self-defence in hopes to be more aware and ready for any danger,” he said.
Zeenath Jacobs, 21, from Lentegeur, said she gained a lot of knowledge in the workshop and took advantage of the opportunity to ask several questions. “The space was safe and engaging with all the participants in the workshop. I have acquired more knowledge on how sexuality actually works and so much more,” she said.
Mugammad Waathiq Du Plessis, 15, from Beacon Valley, said he was inspired by SA table tennis champion, Shane Overmeyer who hosted the fitness and wellness session.
