Art students got to showcase their work when Advance Edukos Foundation hosted their very first, First Thursday Pop-up Art Exhibition at Rocklands library on September 7.
They got to share the exhibition with the Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, as well as partners, parents, family and friends.
The organisation has been nominated for the After School Arts and Culture Coaching Excellence Awards by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and founder Wendy Abrahams has been nominated for the Arts and Culture coaching Excellence Awards. The main event will take place at the Artscape theatre on Tuesday September 26.
“The purpose of this exhibition was to give our art students an opportunity to showcase their art work right in their own communities. They get opportunities to exhibit their art, however they are not always financially able to visit the places where their artworks are being exhibited,” said Ms Abrahams.
It was an opportunity for their parents and the community to witness their artistic skills, she said.
Some of the artwork was for sale and 85% of the donations will go to the artists.
Their art programme called By Design gives young aspiring artists an opportunity to express themselves through visual and performance art, and create further opportunities for them to explore, she said.
Some of their students were afforded the opportunities to be trained by a mosaic studio in Muizenberg to create art pieces. These art pieces will be displayed as part of the mosaic work taking place at the upgrading of the Fisherman’s Lane in Strandfontein.
Other opportunities are exhibiting at Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) as part of an exhibition by Butterfly Arts Project, called manifesting the new, she said, (“Mitchell’s Plain youngsters’ artwork exhibited at Zeitz MOCAA”, Plainsman, July 28, 2021).
They are encouraged to participate in various competitions. Art student Xavier Japtha, 11, won a competition with the City of Cape Iown in the Global Warming Poster Awareness Competition.
They also have opportunities to exhibit at the Norval Foundation in Steenberg; and some of them were recently part of a Cruelty vs Compassion art exhibition that took place at the Gardens Centre, said Ms Abrahams (“Plain pupils exhibit their self portraits at Norval Foundation”, Plainsman, November 17 2021).
They will host another art exhibition on Thursday October 5.
