The Mitchell’s Plain United Residents’ Association (MURA) is hosting its inaugural community service awards during Heritage Month and is calling on the community to nominate worthy candidates.
Mura, an apolitical umbrella residents’ organisation and non-profit organisation registered with the City of Cape Town, was established in 2016 and formally launched on May 6 2017. To date, 22 organisations and 12 individuals have joined Mura, while it also enjoys representation on six ward committees and is a leading member of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum.
Norman Jantjes, Mura’s chairperson, said the aim of the organisation is to unite the residents of Mitchell’s Plain, while working towards an improved quality of life. They do this by striving to improve service delivery by government, non-government structures and the business sector.
Mr Jantjes said one of Mura’s key objectives is the development of community cohesion and restoring community pride. “We are therefore planning a community service awards ceremony to take place in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday September 29.
“We aim to recognise and acknowledge individuals who go the ‘extra mile’ in serving the community. This gala event further hopes to promote positive role models and service excellence.”
Individuals will be awarded for their service to the community in the following 10 sectors:
• Health
• Civic
• Arts and Culture
• Sports
• Welfare
• Safety and Security
• Education
• Religious
• Business
• Older Persons
Criteria for Individuals to be considered for awards consist of the following:
• Is/was active in the Mitchell’s Plain community for at least three years
• Enhances/d the quality of life and made a positive impact in the lives of the people of Mitchell’s Plain.
• Promotes/d unity, communication, and co-operation within the community.
• Enjoys/ed a certain level of credibility and selflessly served the community.
• Gone beyond the call of duty in serving the community.
The community service award recipients will be selected by a panel of three community leaders.
The deadline to submit nominations for the Mura Community Service Awards is Thursday September 14.
The ceremony will be held at a black-tie gala event at the Cedar High School hall in Rocklands on Friday September 29 at 6pm.
