First Portland Girl Guides interviewed a Mitchell’s Plain entrepreneur and community business leader for a badge.
Mitchell’s Plain Entrepreneurs Hub founder and director Lucretia Splinters and Ward 81 business champion shared various ideas with the girls to pursue entrepreneurship, at the Silversands Girl Guide House, 27 Colosseum Road, in Portland, on Friday June 9.
Ms Splinters made jewellery in her teens and now decades later is a social media fundi, using the platform to promote Mitchell’s Plain businesses.
The hub is among the first certified companies recognised by Meta, the company which owns Facebook, as having digital expertise in community management (“’Plain entrepreneurs share their stories”, Plainsman November 23, 2022).
They completed learning programmes with Meta Blueprint, who help community managers to grow and become certified.
Ms Splinters said the hub aimed to help small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Mitchell’s Plain with research, influence, support and education.
The Girl Guide "Take the Lead" Adventure badge required the girls, aged between 10 and 14, to interview a leader in their community.
Girl guides aged between four and seven are called Teddies; brownies are aged between seven and 10; guides are aged 10 to 14, and rangers are aged 14 to 18.
The adult leaders are all volunteers and parents are also involved as members of the Guide Support Group.
They meet at 27 Colosseum Road, in Portland, every Friday from 4pm until 6pm.
