RLabs House gallery will host Syncopation: The Art of African Jazz, an exhibition, on the Thursdays of May 4 and June 1.
Syncopation: The Art of African Jazz, an exhibition at a Mitchell’s Plain art gallery, will celebrate the life and work of the late saxophonist and Mitchell’s Plain resident Basil “Manenberg” Coetzee, whose family were forcibly removed from District Six to Manenberg.
The jazz exhibition will include paintings by his granddaughter-in-law Mischa Coetzee, and various live performances.
The exhibition will be held at RLabs House gallery, 38 Silverhurst Way, Westridge, on the first Thursdays of May and June, Thursday May 4 and Thursday June 1, at 5.30pm.
The gatherings are meant to call attention to artists from the Cape Flats, and cement Mitchell’s Plain on the First Thursdays calendar, said Althea de Wet, from RLabs.
“It's really about abolishing the exclusivity-of-access to international art communities and expanding horizons for local artists,” she said.
