Author and illustrator Paulvin Webster, from Beacon Valley, reads his first self-published children’s book.
A Beacon Valley entrepreneur has taken pen to paper in writing and illustrating his first self-published children’s book.
Paulvin Webster launched his book Captain AK and Mr. Shooz in the street where he grew up on Saturday December 3.
He has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, having studied at Stellenbosch University and at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
In March last year he gathered children living close to his parents’ Beacon Valley home for a run. They came barefoot, with “sloffies” and broken shoes, which spurred him on to secure takkies and running shoes for the children.
“We did not want them to get hurt. We got in a few donations and we came to know that some of the children do not go to school because they don’t have school shoes or uniform,” he said.
He was off to a slow start in collecting running shoes and then thought it best to use his writing talent.
Mr Webster wrote and published Just pass maths in 2019 after tutoring pupils in the subject. He wrote the book to encourage parents and pupils to master mathematics.
“I love reading and enjoy comics and I thought it best to write a children’s book which could have a local superhero,” he said.
Mr Webster then wrote the book detailing Mr Shooz’s challenge of having to deliver 500 000 shoes within a day.
His book launch included a jumping castle, street games and treats.
Winners of the games were given medals he had received for completing marathons and the Comrades.
The green back cover of his book had a special meaning. Runners who have completed ten races for the same event get a green number.
“A green number is almost like a status and you get privileges for certain things and your tenth race. Now the back cover of my book is green because this is my tenth year in running. My first race was on October 14 in 2012, where I did the 10km gun run. So this is also a tenth anniversary running gift,” he said.
Book profits will be used towards distributing sanitary towels and school shoes.
The book costs R150 and can be bought from Mr Webster, who can be contacted on 065 548 0109 or kaptainak101@gmail.com or find paulvinwebster on social media.
