Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay for life Mitchell’s Plain executive chairwoman Saadiqa Abrahams and team recruitment chairwoman Rasheeda Cerff light candles in honour of loved ones who had died.
Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay for life Mitchell’s Plain has launched their annual memorial night fundraiser, the message being of keeping awake because cancer never sleeps.
Cancer patients, survivors, care givers, family and friends attended a preview of the main event at Westridge High School on Saturday August 13.
This included entertainment, lighting of candles and the luminaria ceremony.
The track is outlined with personally decorated luminaria bags, in memory of or as a dedication to a special warrior who had lost the battle, in honour of a courageous cancer survivor who is still fighting or who has won the battle against cancer.
The local Relay For Life overnight event during which teams of 10 to 15 people spend a minimum of 12 hours walking or running around a track at the Westridge school kicks off on Friday March 3 next year.
It celebrates the lives of cancer survivors, inspires the public to become involved in cancer advocacy efforts and makes important services possible for patients and their families.
Local chairwoman Saadiqa Abrahams said donations were much appreciated and that all efforts in assisting them with this event results would further exposure and contributed towards CANSA’s comprehensive cancer control programme within the region; health programmes and patient care services.
“The Cansa Relay for Life is a community-driven project remembering those who have been diagnosed with cancer and those lost through cancer,” she said.
