Mitchell’s Plain Sub-council 12 came out tops in the City of Cape Town, completing most of its ward allocation projects during the 2021/2022 financial year.
Solomon Philander, sub-council chairman and councillor for Ward 116, including Beacon Valley and parts of Eastridge, said it was indeed a “feather in their cap”.
“We would like to thank the officials for handling our ward allocations so speedily in the sub-council,” he said.
The sub-council includes Ward 116; Ward 92, Tafelsig and parts of Eastridge; Ward 82 Tafelsig West; Ward 76, Ikwezi Park, Mandalay and parts of Lentegeur; and Ward 35, parts of Philippi.
It spent 99.4% of its budget for projects in the final financial progress report for the period ending June 30.
The report was tabled in full council on Thursday July 29.
Hot on their heels is Sub-council 19, including four wards covering Cape Point, Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Kommetjie, Ocean View, Simon’s Town, Seawinds, Noordhoek and Sunnydale with 99.3% of its projects complete.
Third is Sub-council 2, in the northern suburbs, including Cilmor industrial area in the west, Bloekombos, Wallacedene, Kuils River and Haasendal small holdings.
In the last financial year the City, 94% was spent on the execution of ward allocation projects.
“It is important that ward allocation projects receive the required attention to ensure timeous execution and a similar if not better performance in the 2021/22 financial year,” read the report.
Completed projects with recreation and parks in Ward 76 include Cynthia Park at a cost of R98 729; and Penny Park at a cost of R148 333.
A park in Ward 82 had gym equipment installed earlier than anticipated at a cost of R258 936.
In the Tafelsig ward fencing was installed and they are now waiting on benches at a cost of R269 032.
According to projects on schedule, Sub-council 12 has three projects in Ward 76 including an upgrade of the park in Samantha Street, Natalie Park and gym equipment in Samantha Park; and in Ward 35 park furniture and wooden play equipment is being installed.
The Sub-council has sports and job creation programmes in Ward 116. Ward 82 has a job creation and life skills programme totalling more than R91 000.
In Ward 116 according to the employment of semi-skilled fieldworkers, two expanded public works programme (EPWP) fieldworkers are employed in Town Centre from Monday to Friday. They provide reintegration services to people living on the streets, including screenings, follow-ups, data collection and referring to other services.
Mr Philander has allocated grants-in-aid for Ward 116 at a cost of R300 000 to three different organisations, who are compliant to proceed to the second screening.
Ward 82 has R100 000 for capacity building and this will be planned in phases in consultation with Tafelsig ward councillor Washiela Harris.
Ms Harris is also due to distribute neighbourhood watch equipment at a cost of R84 903.
Traffic calming measures are due in Eastridge valued at R100 000 in Ward 116.
Councillor Norman Adonis for Ward 92 has a job creation project in progress; and Ward 116 has an area cleaning project in progress.
