Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Soroptimist International volunteers Trunell Moromand Tamara Rennie, Intyatyambo Yesizwe club founder Ntombesizwe Basso, and Baby Bundles founder Jean Viljoen.
Intyatyambo Yesizwe (Flower of the nation), a club for teen moms, hosted a “Bounce back” programme at Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre Library, in Eastridge, on Monday June 27.
Guest speakers included Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Tamara Rennie, from Soroptimist International, a global volunteer organisation that provides women and girls with education and training needed to achieve economic empowerment.
In a tweet, Mr Hill-Lewis said that “Ntombi“, club founder Ntombesizwe Basso was an everyday hero.
“I was inspired by them at their support day in Mitchell’s Plain,” he said.
Ms Basso, who holds a social science degree with majors in psychology and communication science, said it was all about encouraging and supporting teens to get their education and lead better lives for their children.
The club supports pregnant and teen mothers, aged 14 to 23, from Mitchell’s Plain, Philippi, Khayelitsha and Delft.
They also host parenting classes, teen mom home visits, life skills classes (including anger management), career guidance, ongoing telephonic and in-person counselling, HIV support groups, business days and empowerment sessions.
