Ten Ward 75 women completed a hairdressing course.
Ten women who completed a three-week course to sharpen their hairdressing skills and empower themselves to open a salon, graduated last week.
The women all live in Ward 75, which includes the area bordered by Morgenster Road, Jakes Gerwel Drive, R300, Eisleben Road and Johannes Meintjies as far as the train tracks.
Ward councillor for the area, Joan Woodman, used R100 000 of the ward’s budget to support these women with the help of the City of Cape Town’s department of social development.
At their graduation ceremony, held at the sub-council chambers in Lentegeur on Friday March 25, the women each received hairdressing start-up kits, including a hairdryer, Silver Bullet flat iron, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, scissors, a cutting cape, hair clips and a training manual.
Among those present were Sub-council 17 chairman Elton Jansen, Patriotic Alliance proportional representation (PR) councillor Marvin Sampson, Ms Woodman and service provider Colleen Snell.
Most of the participants had read about the previous hairdressing course in 2019 (“Women’s hairdressing dreams come true“ December 11 2019) in the Plainsman and were registered on the sub-council’s job seekers database.
“These ladies are now able to fend for their families by going from home to home to do hair and build up a clientele which will provide an income and put food on the table,” Ms Woodman said.
Local barber Marwaan Vraagom taught the women to do barber cuts and Cassandra Booysen showcased her skills by teaching them how to work with “natural hair”.
