Sub-council 17 in office
Members of Subcouncil 17, including proportional representation (PR)- and ward councillors for wards 33, 43, 75, 78, 79 and 81.
Mitchell’s Plain has been split into two sub-councils - 12 and 17 - both of which will meet monthly at the Lentegeur chambers, in Melkbos Road.
Sub-council 17 will meet on a Monday, with six ward councillors in attendance - four representing the Democratic Alliance and two the African National Congress - three DA proportional representative (PR) councillors; PR councillors from the Patriotic Alliance, GOOD, African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Cape Coloured Congress (CCC) and Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF).
Ward 43
The DA’s Elton Jansen is Sub-council 17 chairman and councillor for Ward 43, which includes Philippi, Weltevreden Drive and Duinefontein Road, south of Govan Mbeki and east of Strandfontein roads; Strandfontein east of Strandfontein Road, Pavillion Road and Tidal Road, north of the coast and west of Lukannon Drive; in the east, Weltevreden Road, JQ Rocklands sports ground, the Mitchell’s Plain Waste water treatment Works; and Weltevreden Valley, east of Weltevreden Street and west of Jakes Gerwel Drive.
Ward 33
Lungisa Somdaka is African National Congress (ANC) councillor for Ward 33, includes the area north of the Cape Flats Freeway and west of Weltevreden Parkway and Leonard Radu Road, south of the Central railway line and east of Duinefontein Road and Jakes Gerwel Drive.
Ward 75
Joan Woodman is DA councillor for Ward 75 which includes Colorado Park; Morgan’s Village; Wildwood; Woodlands; Highlands Village; Hyde Park; Weltevreden Valley, northeast of Jakes Gerwel Drive; and Westgate, north of Morgenster Street.
Ward 78
Goawa Timm is DA councillor for Ward 78 which includes Lentegeur, southwest of the Central railway line; Portland, northwest of Wespoort Drive; Mitchell’s Plain, northwest of Wespoort Drive and northeast of De Duin Avenue; and Westridge.
Ward 79
Daniel Christians is DA councillor for Ward 79 which includes Portland, northwest of Spine Road, southwest of the Central Railway Line, southeast of Wespoort Drive and northeast of Eisleben Road; Rocklands, southeast of Spine Road; and Strandfontein, east of Lukannon Drive.
Ward 81
Ashley Potts is DA councillor in Ward 81 which includes Rocklands, northwest of Spine Road; Westgate, south of Morgenster; and Westridge, west of De Duin Avenue and south of Wespoort Drive.
Ward 88
Zukisani Sophazi, is ANC councillor for Ward 88, Philippi informal areas, municipal offices; Philippi Park; Philippi pond area; Philippi, north of the Cape Flats Freeway, west of Stock Road, south of Sheffield Road, including Phola Park; Rochester, south of and excluding The Siyangena.
Proportional representation
PR councillors in the sub-council include, the DA’s Bernadette Clarke, from Bayview, who is a member of the urban waste management portfolio committee; Soraya Rigby, from Montrose Park; and Anda Ntsodo who is on the mayoral committee executive management team. The three are also on the human settlements portfolio committee, the chairman of which is Mr Ntsodo.
ACDP PR councillor George Paige is a member of the community services and health portfolio committee; while CCC PR councillor Fadiel Adams is a member of the community services and health; and human settlements portfolio committees. Mr Adams did not attend the inaugural meeting as he was in hospital preparing for an operation the next day.
Philiswa Marman GOOD PR councillor is a member of the rules and ethics committee.
EFF PR councillor Aishah Cassiem is a member of the municipality’s disciplinary and finance portfolio committee.
PA PR councillor Marvin Sampson in a member of the corporate services and urban waste management portfolio committees.
Councillors serve on various committees of council and represent the interests of their communities across a broad range of sectors.
The various committees make recommendations to council and its structures regarding important public service and other municipal issues.
