Mitchell’s Plain United Residents’ Association, an umbrella body for non-profit organisations.
Mitchell’s Plain United Residents’ Association (MURA) is calling organisations to join them.
They are not trying to compete or replace any existing structures, they said, but want to ensure that there is a collective voice for all non-government (NGO) or non-profit organisations.
According to the Department of Social Development (DSD) more than half of NGOs in Mitchell’s Plain do not meet the requirements to access resources and assistance.
MURA member Danny Rass, from Portland, said: “Our aim is to stop the current trend of the same groups benefiting all of the time, by capacitating the NGO sector through workshops and personal interactions to strengthen compliance, governance and accountability,” he said.
They want to engage local councillors through the sub-councils to ensure that organisations benefit from local government funding.
“We welcome all organisations to engage with us so we can sit around the table as equals and work towards the upliftment of all NGOs,” he said.
