The children got their backpacks in time for the start of school this week.
Tafelsig Women of Courage gave 80 children backpacks for school.
Chairperson Beatrice Leng said she started the group in 2014 to help women and children in the community.
Ms Leng has been a community worker in Tafelsig for 35 years.
She and her team handed 80 backpacks, bottles, and a meal to the children in their community on Monday January 17.
Since the pandemic started the group has assisted the community with help such as food, workshops and school necessities.
Secretary Ilhaam Adams said they’ve focused on helping children starting school in 2022.
“Most parents struggle and survive on a social grant, it may not be enough to get their children started for school but we can do all we can to come alongside them and help the parents in need,” she said.
“This is what drives us, giving to those in need, being able to assist our neighbours. Some good can come out of Tafelsig,” said Ms Adams.
Tafelsig Walking Bus member, Veronica Liedeman, said Ms Leng has been helping the community out of her own pocket. “She is a lovely person and we help her as much as we can,” she said.
Aunt Lee-Anne Hannival, 39, from Tafelsig, said the initiative is something good. “Thank you to the sponsors, we are grateful for our children receiving this. It gives our children so much reason to go to school. This lets our children know that they matter and that they should pursue an education as far as possible. We are delighted about this,” she said.
Parent Tasneema Carelse, 40, from Tafelsig, said: “I am grateful that one of my children is receiving help. Every little bit helps in a big way. Whenever we are in need Ms Leng will help us and support us. Thank you.”
