Lantana Primary’s heroes rewarded
Two Lantana primary school pupils took top honours in a national grocery store’s search for a hero.
Grade 4 pupil Imaad Bennett won first prize in the honesty category and Grade 5 pupil An-naas Croy won the environmental awareness category.
Two representatives from Pick 'n Pay Club, Sharon Gerber and Sirvaun Hickley delivered their awards to the pupils at the Lentegeur school on Thursday December 2.
Teacher Alnita Ambraal, Grade 4 head of department and the school's Pick 'n Pay Club co-ordinator entered the pupils in the Hero competition on September 16.
Imaad won a R5 000 gift voucher, a certificate and some Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
He had picked up a R100 note, which a woman had dropped and returned it to her. Imaad had also offered to help a friend raise money to buy school shoes.
“He decided to give back the money to the lady and that his honesty would get him closer to his goal of getting money for his friend's school shoes. Imaad's act proves that honesty is the best policy,” wrote Ms Ambraal.
An-naas Croy won a R2 500 gift voucher, a certificate and doughnuts.
His entry fell into the categories of honesty, kindness despite hardship and environmental awareness in his community to make a living.
“An-naas is an honest and very outspoken boy,” wrote Ms Ambraal.
Despite all the challenges he faces in life, he has a smile on his face.
He is kind to others and the environment.
“He hustles every day by collecting recycling material just to be able to help his parents buy the basic food for the day to be able to have a meal.
“He also uses the money he makes to provide for his little puppy that never seems to disappoint him and loves him,” she wrote.
Ms Ambraal said An-naas is a friendly and honest boy who excels in his academic work.
“He lights up the class with his friendly smile,” said Ms Ambraal.
The two won first and second prizes in this national competition.
They were among 320 entrants countrywide. Three winners were from the Western Cape, one from Limpopo and another from Gauteng.
