Three Mitchell’s Plain libraries participated in city-wide campaign to knit baby beanies to be distributed at clinics across the peninsula.

Library staff and patrons at Rocklands collected 94 yellow and black beanies; Tafelsig, 68 beanies and Westridge, 24 in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day, which was celebrated on Sunday July 18.

The library groups collected yellow and black wool, the same shades as the City of Cape Town’s library mascot LiBee and knitted 3 149 beanies and several other baby items.

Mayoral committee member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien said: “When we challenged our library staff, friends and family to join our beanie project and to knit bee beanies, we knew they’d buzz to the challenge.”

The project celebrates the drone mascot and the City libraries’ upcoming 1 000 Stories before School Reading Campaign, which starts in February next year.

It focuses on the joy, benefits and importance of reading to children from 26-weeks of pregnancy until they go to school when they can start learning to read for themselves.

Patron Wilma Williams said she jumped at the opportunity to boost Tafelsig library.

She belongs to a church women’s fellowship and roped in some of her colleagues to participate in this worthy cause.
