DURBAN - Police Minister Bheki Cele said a dedicated team of police officers were working 24 hours a day to uncover the suspects responsible for the uMlazi mass shootings.
The shootings, which took place earlier this month, resulted in 11 deaths in the space of five days in two separate shooting incidents in Durban’s largest township.
According to Cele, the number of people killed during the two shooting incidents had risen to 12, after another person died in hospital.
In the first incident that took place at uMlazi U Section, six people were shot and killed while they allegedly gathered at one of their houses to celebrate the release of one of the deceased from prison.
Three days after the first incident, five people were also killed in a bloody mass shooting in uMlaz W Section, while three others were injured and taken to hospital.
Cele said the 12th deceased was one of the three people who were taken to the hospital in the second incident.
“There has been no arrest that has been made thus far regarding Umlazi mass shootings,” said Cele yesterday.
Cele said when it came to the Umlazi U Section incident, police received a specific name of the suspect who is being sought by the police.
He said there were teams dedicated to working on the shootings 24/7.
“At the second scene that took place in W Section, we have five people of interest that have been identified thus far. We now know that one person that was killed during that incident was a witness in a certain case. So that could be our lead thus far and we are getting closer in making those arrests,” added Cele.
