Gert-Johan Coetzee, 37, is a prominent South African fashion designer whose work transcends borders and celebrates the rich tapestry of African heritage.
With over two decades of experience in the fashion industry, Coetzee has made a name for himself by blending traditional elements with contemporary design.
His journey is not just about creating stunning garments; it’s about empowering individuals and inspiring the next generation of fashion creatives.
In this exclusive interview, Coetzee shares insights into his career, the challenges he faces, and his unwavering passion for fashion.
What’s your preferred drink of choice when you wake up in the morning and why?
A black americano in the mornings, and in the evenings, Champagne! Life is worth celebrating every day, and a little bit of sparkle reminds me that beauty and joy should be embraced in everything we do.
How long have you been in the arts/entertainment industry and what was the motivation behind it?
I've been immersed in the fashion industry for over two decades. My passion ignited at a young age; I vividly remember dressing my pencils in tissue paper outfits during school.
This early fascination with design led me to pursue formal training at the North West School of Design at sixteen.
The motivation has always been a deep-seated love for fashion and a desire to empower individuals through transformative designs.
What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a local/national celebrity?
Being recognised in the industry offers the incredible advantage of a platform to influence and inspire.
It allows me to spotlight important social issues and mentor emerging talents. However, this visibility also comes with challenges, such as maintaining privacy and managing the pressure to consistently innovate and meet high expectations.
Which of your projects are you most proud of and why?
One project that stands out is dressing Oprah Winfrey for the Global Citizen Festival in 2018. Creating a gown for such an influential figure was both an honour and a testament to the global reach of South African design.
Additionally, launching my bursary programme to support aspiring designers holds a special place in my heart, as I believe in nurturing the next generation of fashion creatives.

What are the biggest creative risks you've taken, and did they work out for you?
Every collection I design involves taking creative risks, whether it’s pushing boundaries in fabric manipulation, introducing bold silhouettes, or incorporating unconventional elements.
One of my boldest moves was my couture collection inspired by African heritage blended with futuristic elements. It was met with incredible reception, proving that fashion evolves when we dare to challenge norms.
What inspires you to wake up every day and continue in your field of work?
Fashion is a language, a way of storytelling without words. The ability to empower people through what they wear to boost their confidence and celebrate individuality fuels my passion every day. Seeing someone feel extraordinary in a Gert creation is the ultimate reward.
How do you approach a challenging role?
I see challenges as opportunities. Whether it’s an unconventional design request or pushing my own creative boundaries, I take a step back, analyse the possibilities, and then dive in fearlessly. Challenges force growth, and growth is what keeps creativity alive.
What is one misconception people often have about you?
People often assume that fashion designers lead glamorous lives 24/7. While there are incredible moments, a huge part of what I do involves meticulous work, long hours, and problem-solving. Fashion is art, but it’s also a business, and balancing both sides is an ongoing challenge.

What is your favourite part about living in Johannesburg, and what would you say to people about visiting?
Johannesburg has an undeniable energy, being fast-paced, creative, and constantly evolving. It’s a city of ambition, where dreams are realised. For visitors, I’d say immerse yourself in the art and fashion scene, explore the local markets, and experience the vibrant cultural heartbeat of Joburg.
Aside from home, what are your favourite holiday destinations and why?
I love Club Med’s all-inclusive ski resorts, especially Val Thorens and Serre Chevalier. These resorts allow you to fully unwind in a luxurious, all-inclusive setting where everything is taken care of.
There’s something magical about skiing during the day and then indulging in world-class cuisine and relaxation afterwards.
Who is your favourite local designer and why?
South Africa has incredible talent, and I deeply admire Thebe Magugu. His work is sophisticated, and intelligent, and tells authentic African stories with a global appeal. His rise in the international fashion space makes me incredibly proud.
What are some of the projects that you are/will be working on in 2025?
2025 is all about expansion both in couture and ready-to-wear. I’m also working on new collaborations and, of course, continuing to evolve my fragrance line. Expect bold innovation and even more boundary-pushing designs!
Some words of encouragement for those wanting to get into the arts/entertainment industry?
Stay true to your vision. This industry is tough, and trends come and go, but authenticity is timeless. Work hard, be fearless in your creativity, and never stop learning. Also, find a mentor who can guide you through the highs and lows of the creative world.
