Her tenacity and discipline have made her a beacon of inspiration for young athletes, proving that hard work, resilience, and unwavering focus can take you to the highest heights. Glamour: How does it feel, representing South Africa on the global stage?
TS: It's such an exhilarating experience – one that’s almost addictive. I think any swimmer or athlete would agree that once you've tasted the thrill of competing on the world stage, you just want to experience it again and again. One of the highlights is receiving your national kit, which makes you feel like part of something bigger. As swimming is generally an individual sport, the sense of unity and being part of a larger team is incredibly special. It turns the whole experience into something more meaningful, and creates a strong sense of pride and camaraderie.
Glamour: How do you set goals and measure success in your athletic career?
TS: My approach involves personal milestones rather than just medals. I focus on achieving personal bests, even if it means finishing last. It's not just about winning; it's about personal growth and improvement in my times. As athletes, we often view success through the lens of medals and records; but true success is about personal satisfaction and happiness. Being a happy swimmer makes me a fast swimmer, and that outlook drives my goals and defines my achievements.
Glamour: Which medal, from throughout your career, holds the most personal significance? And why?
TS: It's truly difficult to pinpoint just one, as every medal has been a blessing, and often unexpected. Each one holds its own significance, and has played a different role in my journey. Of course, I always strive to achieve the best in every race; but some moments stand out. Tokyo was particularly special because it represented a dream come true. On the other hand, Paris was memorable due to the challenges I overcame, and the incredible support I received. Achieving success as a team during that time was unbelievably special. Honestly, thinking about these moments gets me emotional!
Glamour: What has your experience been as a female athlete in South Africa?
TS: It’s definitely challenging. While I deeply appreciate the support I've received, it's often fleeting, and doesn't always accompany me throughout my journey. Unfortunately, our achievements as women are sometimes undervalued in comparison to those of our male counterparts, which can be disheartening.
Glamour: What does being a role model for aspiring athletes mean to you?
TS: Honestly, I don't consider myself a role model; but if my story inspires others or helps them improve, that's truly incredible. I want to emphasise that I never had a singular role model growing up. Instead, I find inspiration in everyday people– my family, individuals who pursue their passions, and those who persevere through life's challenges. These are the people who truly inspire me. I've always aspired to be true to myself, and I believe that's what's most important: drawing lessons from experiences that resonate with your own journey.
