Cyril Naicker shares his experience speaking at Milan Fashion week
On 19 September 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at Milan Fashion Week. As I walked into the room, ready to speak, a wave of surrealism swept over me. For someone like me, whose life journey began in a small South African city, this was more than just a personal milestone. It was a testament to the power of belief, perseverance and faith. My presence in Milan wasn’t just about my journey; it was a celebration of South Africa’s burgeoning fashion industry, and the diverse, rich talent that resides within it.
Looking back, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the path that led me here. This journey was never mine alone – it was a tapestry woven with the love, support and sacrifices of so many people. My parents, who are no longer on this side of eternity, were my greatest champions. They believed in my dreams long before I had the courage to articulate them.
Moments like these– standing far from home, in places I could never have envisioned – bring their memory to the forefront. Their faith in me was unshakable, and I carry it as my anchor, especially in the most unfamiliar places.Thankfully, I wasn’t alone on this adventure. I was surrounded by a trusted circle of confidants who shared in my excitement, believed in my vision, and celebrated every moment of this journey alongside me.
A Journey Forged by Serendipity and Connection
The opportunity to speak at Milan Fashion Week didn’t materialise overnight; it was the result of years of work, chance encounters, and meaningful connections. One pivotal moment came in April 2023 when I met Orietta Pelizzari, a renowned Milanese fashion strategist, during a trend talk in Cape Town. The event was hosted by the South African Footwear & Leather Export Council (SAFLEC), and it was here that Orietta and I began a conversation about the role of South African fashion on the global stage.
Orietta was captivated by the work I had been doing with Fashion Revolution South Africa, an initiative championing sustainability and transparency in fashion. Over a casual dinner at The Winchester Hotel we delved deeper into my story, my vision, and the potential of South African designers. Little did I know that the conversation that evening would set the stage for an invitation to Milan Fashion Week.
Fast forward to May 2024, and Orietta and I met again, this time at The Manor House restaurant in Cape Town. She reaffirmed her interest in having me speak in Milan, and shortly after, I received the official invitation.What started as a serendipitous meeting in Cape Town had blossomed into an opportunity to represent South African fashion on one of the most prestigious stages in the world.
Amplifying South Africa’s Fashion Story
Milan Fashion Week is not just about showcasing collections; it’s a global melting pot where cultures, ideas and creativity converge. As part of the Fashion Hub and Cross-Cultural Business Conversations, I had the honour of highlighting South Africa’s unique contributions to the fashion industry. I spoke about the vibrant creativity emanating from Cape Town’s fashion scene, where designers are re-imagining heritage through modern design. I shared stories of resilience, innovation and sustainability, themes that are deeply embedded in our fashion narrative. What resonated most with the audience was the authenticity of our stories – how South African fashion isn’t just about clothing, but about culture, history and hope.
Sustainability was a major focus of my talk. I was proud to showcase how South African designers are leading the charge in ethical fashion, from using eco-friendly materials to prioritising fair labour practices. The global audience was captivated, and it affirmed what I’ve always believed: South Africa has the potential to be a leader in sustainable and ethical fashion.
Building Bridges and Fostering Collaboration
My time in Milan was also an opportunity to connect with industry leaders, influencers and creatives who share a vision of inclusivity and sustainability.The conversations and connections I made there were invaluable, opening doors to potential collaborations that could bridge continents and cultures.
One of my dreams is to see more South African designers take centre stage at events like Milan Fashion Week.The talent we have in this country is extraordinary, from young designers experimenting with bold ideas to established names redefining the global fashion narrative. Milan reminded me of the importance of platforms that amplify these voices.
Looking Ahead
As I plan for 2025, my goal is to bring more South African designers to Milan, particularly those from Cape Town. The city’s unique blend of creativity, heritage and innovation deserves a global audience. I am hopeful that with the support of local organisations, including the Cape Town Municipality, we can create more opportunities for our designers to shine internationally. Milan Fashion Week has shown me what is possible when cultures collide and ideas are exchanged. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of storytelling, authenticity and collaboration.
