The talents of Cape minstrel troupes and Malay choirs will be celebrated in the Jive Culture Shock at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone at 8pm on Friday September 20, Saturday September 21, Friday September 27 and Saturday September 28. The show on Heritage Day, Tuesday September 24, takes place at noon.
The competition started as an online event during the Covid-19 lockdown. In 2024, it’s returning as the first live competition in a partnership with the Eoan group and their performance art students.
“We are excited to take the competition element to a new level this year and audiences are in for a treat with all the teams competing for top honours. Capetonians should expect to be wowed with the talent that will be showcased on stage,” says producer, Faghri Abrahams.
Four teams will go head-to-head in the Jive Culture Shock Champions competition over two nights, performing junior and senior solos, English and Afrikaans comics, and Nederlands lied.
Judges include Armien Vardien, Felecia Lesch and Jitsvinger, with Tashreeq “TDV” De Villiers and Shadley Schroeder as this year’s hosts.
There will be a brass band battle on Heritage Day.
In the finale, three teams will go head-to-head and there will be performances by Jitsvinger, Eoan group students, TDV, Shadley Schroeder, and a few surprise acts.
Tickets range between R150 and R600 through Webtickets.
