Somizi Mhlongo first opened up about his sexuality in the mid-1990s, a bold move at the time, especially for someone in the spotlight.
Known for his vibrant personality, the media icon embraced his identity as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, even during the height of his career.
In a 2015 interview with “Sunday World”, Mhlongo revealed the challenges he faced.
“I am blessed. I am one of the few. We never even discuss my sexuality with my parents and my family. My parents are a true example of what unconditional love is. They’ve let me be who I am,” he said.
He credited his family for their support during a time when he was still navigating his identity.
“When I was personally confused and scared, not of society but as I was still finding out how to handle some of the intricate situations I would be in, my family supported me as I prepared myself for what was to come.
“Trust me, your parents know from day one, they know from your behaviour what your sexual preference is,” he added.
Over the years, Mhlongo has used his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in South Africa, becoming an iconic voice for acceptance and self-expression.
Mhlongo’s personal life has often made headlines, from his high-profile relationships to his evolving views on love. His marriage to Mohale Motaung ended in a very public and messy split, with abuse allegations surfacing during the breakup.
Since then, Mhlongo has shifted his approach to relationships, prioritising honesty and fluidity over conventional norms.
In an interview with “TshisaLIVE”, he opened up about his current relationship philosophy.
“I haven’t found love again. I am just mingling to mingle. I’m just having fun. There’s no love. I am in relationships,” he said.
He elaborated that he identifies as 80% - 90% polygamous and pansexual, embracing his exploration of love without the constraints of traditional commitment.
“With age, you realise certain things, you discover yourself. I’ve realised I am possibly 80% - 90% polygamous and I am pansexual. So I’m exploring.
“I am just living my life. I discovered that later in my life and I am enjoying it. I am not committed to anyone, I don’t want anyone to commit to me,” he shared.
The former “Idols SA” judge also highlighted his preference for honesty over the idea of an "open relationship“.
“An honest relationship will be sometimes I wake not feeling the same way I felt yesterday about you and I must be open and honest with it,” he explained.
Although Mhlongo is enjoying his newfound freedom in relationships, marriage is still part of his future plans. However, his perspective on marriage is unconventional.
“Marriage is on the cards, I’ll definitely get married. I love the concept of marriage. To be honest, I’m more in love with the wedding than the marriage, but I understand the marriage part,” he said.
“It would be an honest relationship, not an open one. Open to me means you can date whoever you want to date whenever you want. An honest relationship means we have a conversation before anything happens, and we have to be in agreement,” he clarified.
