From actress to author: Salamina Mosese celebrates African culture in 'Cook-off at Gogo’s Spaza’
Celebrated South African actress, film producer, television host, and author Salamina Mosese continues to add her unique voice to the landscape of storytelling.
Known for her winning performances at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), Mosese's latest literary endeavour is an extension of her passion for storytelling — one that not only reflects her artistry but also underscores her commitment to representing African narratives, particularly in children’s literature.

A passion ignited during lockdown
Mosese’s journey into writing was somewhat unanticipated. While she's always been an avid reader with an ambition to write, the global lockdown ignited a newfound urgency to craft stories for children.
While on maternity leave and helping her daughter with online schooling, she noticed a lack of relatable literature authored by African writers.
This awakening sparked a desire to contribute to the South African children’s literacy scene, harnessing her experiences as a film producer.
“I am passionate about continuing to tell stories that are authentic and relatable to young children,” she says.
The writing process: discipline meets inspiration
Writing a book, she notes, is a significant commitment, necessitating a blend of discipline and passion.
“It starts with a strong vision of the story or message, alongside a clear plan from start to finish.”
For Mosese, establishing a routine and having a supportive network is critical in navigating the unpredictable nature of writing.
“I focus on creating work that feels authentic and true,” she adds.
Introducing "Cook-off at Gogo’s Spaza"
Her latest release, “Cook-off at Gogo’s Spaza”, showcases her dedication to celebrating the vibrancy of community life, particularly the unique dynamic of spaza shops - hubs of connection and culture in SA.
The story revolves around family, community, and the unifying power of food, portraying how even culinary disasters can lead to deeper connections.
“I wanted to celebrate South African culinary traditions and family dynamics,” she explains.
“Cook-off at Gogo’s Spaza” joins her previous hit, “Disaster at Gogo’s Spaza”, further establishing Mosese as a formidable voice in children’s literature. Her books are available at major retailers such as Exclusive Books, Takealot and Bargain Books.
Balancing creativity and family life
Aside from her impressive literary pursuits, Mosese balances a demanding schedule that involves film production and parenting.

Looking ahead, Mosese's vision includes writing more children's books in addition to exploring literature for other audiences. “I will definitely be writing more books,” she reveals.
