Two distinguished names in the world of design, Ardmore and Cole & Son, have come together to create something truly extraordinary: "The Tree of Life" wallpaper. This collaboration draws deep inspiration from nature, specifically the iconic African Baobab tree, a symbol of strength, longevity, and vitality. First unveiled in Paris this January, this stunning design will debut in South Africa at the prestigious Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town from February 20 to 23, 2025, allowing the world to experience this remarkable blend of artistry and nature.
This launch is a monumental occasion for both brands. Cole & Son is marking its 150th anniversary, a significant milestone that highlights its legacy of craftsmanship and innovation in the world of wallpaper. Ardmore, known for its exquisite hand-painted ceramics and textiles, is celebrating 40 years of creating works that honour the rich cultural and natural beauty of Africa.
"The Tree of Life represents more than just a beautiful design; it reflects the essence of our collective journey as artists and creators," said Fée Halsted, Founder of Ardmore. "We’re deeply proud to share this vibrant depiction of nature, starting in Cape Town, where it feels especially meaningful. Our hope is that it inspires a deep connection to the beauty around us."
Marie Karlsson, Managing and Creative Director of Cole & Son, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the unique aspects of the collaboration. "This project is a beautiful fusion of tradition and innovation. As we commemorate 150 years of Cole & Son, it’s a privilege to partner with Ardmore, whose distinctive artistic vision enhances our own heritage of creating exceptional wallpapers," Karlsson said.
The design is a powerful reflection of the Baobab tree's grandeur, often referred to as the "Tree of Life" for its remarkable ability to thrive in the harshest environments and provide sustenance to both people and wildlife. The design brings together the symbolism of the Baobab with the meticulous craftsmanship of both Ardmore and Cole & Son, making it an artwork that speaks to the viewer on both an emotional and aesthetic level.
After its debut in South Africa, "The Tree of Life" will continue its journey, with plans for exhibitions at prestigious venues in London and New York later in the year. The global tour of the wallpaper underscores the universality of its message and the timeless appeal of both Ardmore and Cole & Son’s design philosophies.
This collaboration is more than just a design project; it’s a celebration of the enduring bond between art, culture, and nature. Both Ardmore and Cole & Son continue to push the boundaries of design, creating products that not only beautify spaces but also inspire those who experience them.
