Investec Cape Town Art Fair's returns
As the art world gears up for 2025, a year ripe with possibilities, the intersection of innovation, sustainability, and technology is pushing boundaries.
Digital art is booming, diverse voices are demanding space, and environmental issues are now central to creative expression.
The Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF), running from February 21–23 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, is setting the stage for a pivotal shift with the unveiling of its highly anticipated 'Tomorrows/Today' section.
This year's lineup brings together 12 groundbreaking artists who are challenging the status quo and shaping the future of global art.
Curated by Dr. Mariella Franzoni for the third time, the 'Tomorrows/Today' section invites artists to explore her theme, Experience, Attempt, Experiment.
The result is a stunning mix of textile works, photography, and painting, showcasing emerging talent from around the world.
Among the stars of the show are:
- Zehnlin Zhang (China), whose oil paintings challenge conformity, using traditional techniques rooted in his personal experiences.
- Georgina Maxim (Zimbabwe), blending colonial critique and post-colonial identity through her sewing technique, ‘dhunge mutunge’.
- Mulambö (Brazil), using vibrant textile art and performance to celebrate Afro-Brazilian heritage and resistance to racism.
- Agnes Essonti Luque (Spain), who explores food, femininity, and history through mixed media.
- Mankebe Seakgoe (South Africa), whose charcoal and mixed media works interrogate Black thought and literature.
These artists are part of a global movement focused on identity, politics, and culture. As Dr. Franzoni explains, “'Tomorrows/Today' gives us a glimpse into the practices, themes, and methods that will define the future of art.”
The exhibition not only presents thought-provoking art but also highlights fresh narratives around socio-political issues, gender, and cultural exchange.
With the introduction of the Experience, Attempt, Experiment framework, these works aim to spark dialogue and inspire new ways of seeing the world.
An exciting addition this year is the R80,000 cash prize, awarded to the artist with the strongest presentation, as judged by a panel of experts.
Previous winners include Boemo Diale (2024) and Michaela Younge (2022), setting the stage for another year of discovery.
In addition to 'Tomorrows/Today', the fair will feature curated sections such as SOLO, Generations, and Cabinet/Trophy, each pushing the boundaries of creativity and encouraging fresh conversations.
These spaces invite artists to reflect on themes of play, cultural intersections, and the evolving role of art in society.
