The past few weeks have been nothing short of spectacular for Cape Town martial artists.

From Melkbosstrand to Wynberg, the ring has been filled with the intense energy of boxing, K-1, and MMA.

What better way to cap off a three-weekend stretch of thrilling MMA action in the city than with the PFC’s 22-fight Redemption Card in Camps Bay this past weekend.

Headlined by Wade Hammond and Timothy Steenkamp, the card was a true representation of what martial arts is all about. If anything witnessed on the night is to go by, the future of MMA in Cape Town looks in fantastic shape.

Hammond stopped Steenkamp in the third round of their five-round bout after Steenkamp’s leg gave out from the leg kicks delivered by Hammond.

With this victory, Hammond avenged his Muay Thai loss to Steenkamp from a year ago.

For the duration of the fight, it played out exactly as expected. Both men are known for their aggressive, activity-driven style and they certainly lived up to that reputation.

Each looked ready to stop the other, but it was Hammond who made his presence felt early with a lightning-fast start, setting the pace right from the get-go.

The win not only gave Hammond the redemption he sought but also earned him the Pro K-1 PFC Middleweight Championship, a well-deserved accolade.

PFC Kenneth Wallace, left, and Cameron Nicolella were in involved in another explosive K-1 fight, won by Wallace.

Before the pros took the stage for the main event, another fight nearly brought the roof down at Camps Bay High School.

The MMA Bantamweight battle between Fighterz Inc.’s Reuben Job and MadFit’s Ezra Solomons was an absolute spectacle. Both fighters came out with fierce determination, looking to take each other’s heads off, keeping the packed hall on the edge of their seats throughout the three-round battle.

The two put on a top-tier striking display and in the end, Job earned the judge’s decision. Both men received a standing ovation for their efforts, and Job, with his impressive performance, is certainly one to keep an eye on as his career progresses.

In total, there were three titles up for grabs on Saturday night. Along with Hammond’s victory in the main event, Patrick Mbokwe claimed the PFC Welterweight title after Jason Mackay was disqualified for a headbutt during their MMA matchup.

Lisolethu Majalisa retained her under-54kg women’s boxing title after outpointing Anzel Kellerman in a compelling contest.

The ladies' K-1 matchup was another standout moment of the evening, and was duly awarded Fight of the Night. The action between Mitchell’s Plain Kickboxing’s Kaylin Stubbs and Tricore’s Roslyn Humpreys kept the crowd on their toes. After an intense battle, it was Humpreys who came out victorious.

Additionally, Phillip Cronje delivered an extraordinary head-kick knockout of Simamkele Stwayi, adding another highlight to a night filled with incredible performances.
