Based on snippets of her parents' lives during World War II, Hout Bay author Searle's debut novel transports readers to war-torn Paris.

The heroine is Odette, a young headstrong woman from a military family who navigates a world of espionage, resistance and love. Set against the backdrop of German occupation, Odette is working for the French Ministry of Defence when she meets Jean, a mysterious figure of mixed heritage and uncertain allegiances.

Their romance unfolds amid air-raids, betrayals and the harsh realities of war, keeping me engaged with the emotional depth and historical timeline.

Searle vividly captures the atmosphere of 1940s Paris by blending historical events with a personal, intimate story of courage and resilience.

Odette's character development from a sheltered young woman to a daring participant in resistance efforts is compelling, mirrored by Jean's enigmatic role as a leader in the Parisian resistance.

Searle’s meticulous research and passion for storytelling shine through, painting a melange of sights, sounds and emotions that evoke the era. From the bohemian quarters of Paris to the grim realities of internment camps and the eventual liberation, the story is an exploration of love that is tested by wartime adversity. Her lyrical prose and vivid descriptions ensure that the legacy of Odette and Jean's wartime experiences linger.
