South Peninsula Cricket club kept alive their hopes of gaining promotion when they beat visitors Delft CC by 10 wickets in a Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Second Division 40-over match played in scorching temperatures, at Parkwood sports complex, on Saturday, January 20.
The home side won the toss and elected to bowl first. Delft had a good start and were eventually dismissed for 153 in 32 overs.
South Peninsula replied with 157 in 20 overs without conceding a single wicket.
Captain Daniel Thomas top-scored with a well played 107 not out. Destroyer-in-chief, Carl Beukes claimed 4/6 in five overs.
It’s been a brilliant season thus far with South Peninsula having played 13 matches, winning 12 and drawing one match, says the match and registration secretary, Cheslyn van Sensie.
Their First Team are current log leaders in the Second Division, he said, leading Strand by two points going into Saturday’s match against Delft.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the club was established in 1984 and formerly known as Lotus Park Cricket Club before changing its name to South Peninsula Cricket Club.
SP will look to maintain their winning form as they travel to the northern suburbs to face Delft’s neighbours Wesbank.With nine games remaining, Van Sensie and co are cautiously optimistic that things will remain intact.
”Our main club goal is for promotion to the First Division D, we are now in a good position to challenge for the league title as well,” he said.
The club currently has two senior sides, but, looking forward, Van Sensie said there are plans to start a junior division in the upcoming season.
Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5.30pm at the Parkwood Sports Complex behind Fairmount High School.
